Attraction of Trichogramma Wasps to Butterfly Oviposition-Induced Plant Volatiles Depends on Brassica Species, Wasp Strain and Leaf Necrosis

چکیده

Within the Brassicaceae, wild as well crop species are challenged by specialist herbivores including cabbage white butterflies ( Pieris spp.). The crucifer Brassica nigra responds to oviposition synergistic expression of two egg-killing traits. Genotypes that express a hypersensitive response (HR)-like necrosis (direct egg-killing) also emit oviposition-induced plant volatiles (OIPVs) attracting Trichogramma egg parasitoids (indirect egg-killing). This so-called double defense line can result in high butterfly mortalities. It remains unknown whether this strategy is unique B. or more common species. To test this, we examined different evanescens lines OIPVs emitted and three close relatives napus, rapa , oleracea ). Furthermore, evaluated HR-like played role attraction toward volatiles. Our results show specificity wasp Three out four attracted specific T. strain, crops napus . Parasitoid was positively affected presence one findings imply that, despite being true generalist terms host range, shows intraspecific variation during searching, which should be taken into account when selecting parasitoid for biocontrol certain crops. Finally, conclude plants within Brassicaceae family possess traits exert double-defense may enable effective selection breeders.

Plant Volatiles Induced by Herbivore Egg Deposition Affect Insects of Different Trophic Levels

Plants release volatiles induced by herbivore feeding that may affect the diversity and composition of plant-associated arthropod communities. However, the specificity and role of plant volatiles induced during the early phase of attack, i.e. egg deposition by herbivorous insects, and their consequences on insects of different trophic levels remain poorly explored. In olfactometer and wind tunn...

Synergistic effects of direct and indirect defences on herbivore egg survival in a wild crucifer.

Evolutionary theory of plant defences against herbivores predicts a trade-off between direct (anti-herbivore traits) and indirect defences (attraction of carnivores) when carnivore fitness is reduced. Such a trade-off is expected in plant species that kill herbivore eggs by exhibiting a hypersensitive response (HR)-like necrosis, which should then negatively affect carnivores. We used the black...

Electrophysiological and behavioral responses of a parasitic wasp to plant volatiles induced by two leaf miner species.

In the present study, Y-tube olfactometric assays demonstrated that headspace volatile extracts collected from leaf miner-damaged, or artificially damaged, bean plants were more attractive to naive females of the parasitoid insect Opius dissitus than those collected from healthy plants. Headspace extracts from both Liriomyza huidobrensis and Liriomyza sativae second-instar larvae-damaged beans ...

Feeding-induced rearrangement of green leaf volatiles reduces moth oviposition

The ability to decrypt volatile plant signals is essential if herbivorous insects are to optimize their choice of host plants for their offspring. Green leaf volatiles (GLVs) constitute a widespread group of defensive plant volatiles that convey a herbivory-specific message via their isomeric composition: feeding of the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta converts (Z)-3- to (E)-2-GLVs thereby attrac...

Egg parasitoid attraction toward induced plant volatiles is disrupted by a non-host herbivore attacking above or belowground plant organs

Plants respond to insect oviposition by emission of oviposition-induced plant volatiles (OIPVs) which can recruit egg parasitoids of the attacking herbivore. To date, studies demonstrating egg parasitoid attraction to OIPVs have been carried out in tritrophic systems consisting of one species each of plant, herbivore host, and the associated egg parasitoid. Less attention has been given to plan...
